Road Collision Increase
With the summer holidays now here there have unfortunately this week been a number of deaths on the roads in Devon. I spend much time considering how and why these collisions take place. There is no simple answer but a combination of circumstantial factors.
I am of the opinion that if better training were more readily available, the average driver would be better educated leading to better understanding. Sometimes it only takes a seconds laps in concentration for a crash to happen, other times it is poor decision making resulting greater risks, but a percentage of incidents is not being able to read the road and conditions in front of the vehicle.
There are many really nice examples of sections of road which have been adapted due to previous collisions. The surface of the road may be a different colour with yellow lines stretched from kerb to kerb. Warning signs at the side of the road may have been put up with a high visibility frame either in fluorescent yellow or a stand out colour. Flashing road signs that detect a car approach and illuminate to warn you about an impending hazard, all saying to the driver ‘pay attention!’ Yet it is all too easy to drive on by and not notice the warnings of danger. Perhaps it is a road you drive on regularly or if in a unfamiliar area you may be distracted by the navigation.
By putting yourself forward for further training will help you and those that travel in a car with you. Perhaps you wish to be able to make a difference and become an ADI yourself.
